To upgrade the Link BMW Mini plug-in ECU to a Direct Spark ignition setup the following steps must be taken:

1.Disconnect the wiring from the wasted spark coils. Remove the coils and fit four direct spark coils to the engine.

2.Connect a wire between the ECUs Ignition 1 output and the direct spark coils negative terminal. The direct spark coil must not have an inbuilt ignitor.

3.Connect a wire between the ECUs Ignition 2 output and the direct spark coils negative terminal. The direct spark coil must not have an inbuilt ignitor.

4.Connect a wire between the ECUs Ignition 3 output and the input channel of an external ignitor. Wire the ignitors channel output to the direct spark coils negative terminal. The direct spark coil must not have an inbuilt ignitor.

5.Connect a wire between the ECUs Ignition 4 output and the input channel of an external ignitor. Wire the ignitors channel output to the direct spark coils negative terminal. The direct spark coil must not have an inbuilt ignitor.

6.Connect to the ECU with PCLink, go to ECU Settings > Ignition > Ignition Setup > Ignition Main and change the Ignition Mode to Direct Spark. Store the configuration to the ECU (F4).

7.In PCLink go to ECU Settings > Ignition > Ignition Setup > Ignition Test and activate the ignition outputs in turn. Confirm that each direct spark ignition coil is working.

An external ignitor MUST be used on Ignition Outputs 3 and 4, failure to do so will damage the ECU.
